Complete Guide to the I-94 Form for Canadian Travelers Entering the United States

Summary

The I-94 form is now mandatory for snowbirds and Canadian travelers staying 30 days or more in the United States. Checking, obtaining, and keeping this document is essential to avoid administrative issues at the U.S. border. With Tour+Med, you can count on a trusted partner to travel with peace of mind.

Traveling to the United States may seem simple for Canadians, but some documents are essential to cross the border smoothly. The I-94 form is one of them. Whether you’re coming from Quebec, Ontario, or elsewhere in Canada, understanding this form is key to enjoying your trip fully and legally.

What is the I-94 Form?

The I-94 form is an official document issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). It serves as proof of your legal entry and authorized stay in the United States.

Why is the I-94 Form Important?

Why is the I-94 Form Important? It allows U.S. authorities to track the entry and exit of foreign travelers. For Canadians, it may be required in certain situations:

  • Extended stays (over 30 days)
  • Work-related travel
  • Studies at an American institution

Do Canadians Need the I-94 Form?

Until recently, Canadians did not need an I-94 form for short visits. However, since April 2025, it has been mandatory for any stay of 30 days or more. Some situations may still qualify for exemptions depending on the type of visa or entry:

  • Stays for work purposes
  • Studies at a U.S. institution
  • Temporary immigration status with a specific visa

These exceptions are detailed on the USAGov website

How to Obtain the I-94 Form

When and Where to Get It?

  • Arrival by air or sea: the form is generated automatically and linked to your passport.
  • Land border crossings: you must request it directly from the border officer.

Since the automation of the I-94 form on September 30, 2025, most travelers no longer need to fill out a paper form. It is created electronically upon entry into the U.S. However, at land borders, travelers must still request it.

Canadians leaving the U.S. by land (e.g., returning to Quebec or Ontario) should keep proof of departure, as land exits are not always recorded automatically.

Steps to Follow

  1. Submit an application online through the official CBP website or directly at the border crossing.
  2. Pay the $30 USD fee at the time of application.
  3. Check approval status on the official CBP website.
  4. Print a copy for your records and keep it with you during your stay (just like your travel insurance wallet card!).

How to Check if You Already Have an I-94

You can verify your status on the official CBP website. You’ll need to enter:

  • your passport number
  • the country of issuance
  • and your date of birth

Tip: Always print or keep a digital copy handy when traveling in the United States.

What Happens if You Don’t Comply?

Failure to comply with the rules may result in fines, denial of entry on a future trip, or even tax complications related to U.S. residency. The USCIS, federal agency responsible for immigration, may intervene in cases of missing or incorrect records.

Common Mistakes and Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Entering the wrong passport number
  • Not saving an electronic or paper copy of the form
  • Overstaying the authorized period indicated on the I-94 form
  • Forgetting to verify or renew your status if needed

If you make a mistake, it’s important to contact U.S. authorities promptly to correct the issue.
