This depends on a variety of factors. The travel insurance embedded with your credit card is built to meet the needs of most travellers, for most of their trips, but it may not meet your specific needs. Credit card insurance often offers:

  • Limited coverage and trip lengths
  • Lower maximum amounts
  • Major exclusions

It also doesn’t always cover older travellers or extended stays. Additional travel insurance is often necessary.

  • Emergency Medical Insurance covers medical expenses and emergencies you may encounter while travelling.
  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance protects the deposits you’ve made and prepaid expenses you booked (such as your plane ticket, hotel, excursions, etc.) if you need to cut your trip short or cancel it entirely.

They are separate products, and cancellation insurance is not automatically included when you purchase travel medical insurance.

  • Single trip → Per-Trip Plan
  • Multiple trips per year → Multi-Trip Annual Plan
  • Travelling with family → Family Travel Insurance
  • Trip booked in advance → Add Trip Cancellation Insurance

A representative can help you choose the best coverage for your trip.

Yes, in certain cases, such as:

  • Cancelling before departure, or
  • Coming home early.

Refund conditions vary depending on the type of coverage, and when the request is made.

If your trip exceeds the maximum duration permitted by your plan, you may:

  • Request an extension (prior to your current plan’s expiration date), or
  • Opt for a Per-Trip Plan covering the full length of your stay.

Costs can be very high. A single medical emergency can cost thousands of dollars per day, particularly in the United States or in countries with privatized healthcare systems. Without travel insurance, you would be entirely responsible for these costs.

Travel medical insurance mainly covers:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Hospitalization
  • Medical care and diagnoses
  • Paramedical services
  • Emergency repatriation

The exact coverage depends on the plan you choose and the terms of your policy.

All our medical plans automatically include 24/7 emergency medical assistance, who can be reached from anywhere in the world.

No, not adequately. Provincial government health plans only reimburse a small portion of medical expenses incurred abroad, often well below the actual costs. Travel insurance is essential to bridge that gap.

Although travel insurance is not legally required, it is strongly recommended. Outside Canada and your province of residence, government health insurance plans cover very little when it comes to medical expenses. Without travel insurance, you would be responsible for most of the costs in the event of a medical emergency, hospitalization, ambulance transport, or emergency repatriation.
