COVID-19 Riders
Surf on the next wave!
We now offer 2 different riders, for your most comprehensive coverage
There is no travel advisory pertaining to COVID-19 at the moment, but that doesn’t make our riders superfluous! The pandemic has been keeping everyone on their toes so who knows if the next wave or variant won’t be synonymous of a global travel advisory, if your destination won’t have a specific advisory, or if testing won’t become mandatory again?
Does this option meet your needs?
- You wish to be covered up to $5,000,000 for COVID-19 during your trip, no matter if a travel advisory is issued for your destination before or after your departure.
- You want your trip to be covered if you test positive to COVID-19 prior to your departure and can’t board the plane or cross the border.
- You want trip interruption benefits (lodging, food, transportation) if you test positive and can’t return home on the scheduled return date.
“We simply cannot say enough good things about Tour+Med. They were a pleasure to deal with throughout our experience. We tell our friends and family, “Do not hesitate to buy travel insurance through this company. They are the BEST!”
COVID-19 Rider on
Travel Medical Insurance
Without the rider, your travel medical insurance has an exclusion if you visit a destination for which an advisory to “avoid non-essential travel” (Level 3) or to “avoid all travel” (Level 4) has been issued by the Government of Canada, whether before or after your departure (see exclusion 19f in the policy).
With the rider, you eliminate the pandemic situation pertaining to COVID-19 from the scope of that exclusion.
In other words, you can enjoy your trip and peace of mind, no matter if an advisory pertaining to the pandemic is issued for your destination before your departure, or even increased to a higher risk level after your departure.
COVID-19 Rider on
Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance
Without the rider, testing positive to COVID-19 does not necessarily correspond to a medical “emergency” (as per the policy definition), especially if you don’t have symptoms. Therefore, cancellation or interruption of your trip for such reason would not be a covered risk.
With the rider, a “positive diagnosis to COVID-19” will be added to the definition of “Emergency” and you will be covered*, even if you have no symptoms.
In other words, cancellation of your trip will be covered* if you test positive to COVID-19 but don’t have symptoms. And if you need to interrupt your trip because you tested positive, you will have access to the policy’s trip interruption benefits (lodging, food, transportation), even if you don’t have symptoms.
(Conditions apply. The riders are exclusive to Tour+Med protections. They cannot be added to group travel insurance nor to coverage you may hold through another insurance company. The rider on Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance must be added at the time of purchase: it cannot be added after the policy’s effective date. If medical and Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance are purchased simultaneously and the rider is added to either protection, it will automatically be added to the other protection.)

What’s the use of the COVID-19 Riders?
Rider on Travel Medical Insurance
COVID-19 is currently covered*, given that there is no travel advisory pertaining to the pandemic at the moment. However, should an advisory pertaining to the pandemic be issued or modified, COVID-19 could be excluded from your coverage. When adding the rider to your travel medical insurance, you will be covered up to $5,000,000, regardless of advisories (pertaining to the pandemic) that could be issued prior to your departure, or modified after your departure.
Rider on Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance:
A positive diagnosis to a screening test made before your departure, or before your return, does not necessarily meet the definition of a medical “emergency”. When adding the rider to your Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance, you will be covered if a positive result prevents you from going on the scheduled trip. You will also become eligible to trip interruption benefits if you can’t come back on the scheduled return date!
*Coverage is subject to the other conditions and limitations of the policy.
Additional benefits (if you test positive while on your trip)
In the event that you receive a first positive diagnosis of COVID-19 (confirmed by a physician) during your trip and that you must legally proceed to an imposed quarantine at destination, your medical insurance will automatically be extended, at no cost, up to a maximum of 14 days.
If you added the rider to your Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurace, you will become eligible for the trip interruption benefits presented under section D. COVERED BENEFITS of the policy, such as:
- 3. Reasonable, additional accomodation and meal expenses up to CAN $250 per day, up to a maximum of ten (10) days (…). The daily maximum reimbursement is limited to CAN $500 under the policy.
- 4. Reasonable, additional transportation expenses needed to reach your departure point or to travel from the place your trip was interrupted to the place where you can rejoin your trip.
The sum of the benefits pad under the rider and the policy cannot exceed the Sum Insured indicated on your Travel Insurance Confirmation.

Can I add the COVID-19 Rider to my existing policy?
It depends on the protection.
If you hold a Tour+Med medical insurance and have not yet left on your trip, yes, we can probably add the rider to your policy. But if you are covered elsewhere or are already on your trip, it will not be possible.
As per the Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance, it is not possible to add the rider after the policy’s effective date. It must be added at the time of purchase.
How much does the COVID-19 Rider cost?
There is no fixed surcharge for the rider. The surcharge is calculated upon a mix of many factors. Speak with your representative for a quote.
Does the COVID-19 Rider cover variants?
Yes. The COVID-19 Rider provides coverage up to $5,000,000 in the event of a positive diagnosis to COVID-19 while on your trip, no matter if the positive diagnosis (confirmed by a physician) was due to the original virus or a variant.
