Travel advisories for Canadian travellers have been lifted, but that doesn’t make our COVID-19 Rider superfluous! The pandemic keeps everybody on their toes so who knows if a new advisory won’t be reinstated in the future? Or if your destination won’t be the subject of a specific advisory? Moreover, the Rider is what makes you eligible to additional benefits if you test positive while on your trip.
Without the COVID-19 Rider, your medical travel insurance protection has an exclusion in the event of a travel advisory to avoid all travel or avoid non-essential travel being issued by the Canadian Government prior to your departure date or while on your trip. (See exclusion 19f in the policy.)
With the COVID-19 Rider, you eliminate the pandemic situation pertaining to COVID-19 from the scope of exclusion 19f. Furthermore, adapted and exclusive benefits will be added to your coverage. (Take note the COVID-19 Rider can only be added to a Tour+Med individual protection. It cannot be added to group plan, or individual protections from other insurers.)

What’s the goal of the COVID-19 Rider exactly?
As mentioned above, there is an exclusion in the policy if you travel to a destination for which the Canadian Federal Government issues an advisory to “avoid non-essential travel” (level 3) or to “avoid all travel” (level 4). This exclusion applies no matter if the advisory is issued before or after your departure.
When you add the COVID-19 Rider to your Tour+Med policy, you eliminate the pandemic situation pertaining to COVID-19 from the scope of that exclusion, and will be covered up to $5,000,000* in the event of a medical emergency resulting from a positive diagnosis while on your trip. (Coverage includes costs of hospitalization, treatments, and repatriation, if necessary.) *Subject to the other terms, conditions and exclusions of the policy.
The COVID-19 Rider allows you to enjoy peace of mind when travelling since it prevents you from having to return within 10 days if a level 3 or 4 advisory (pertaining to COVID-19) is issued for your destination after your departure. (See exclusion 19f in the policy.)
Additional benefits (if you test positive while on your trip)
In the event that you receive a first positive diagnosis of COVID-19 (confirmed by a physician) during your trip and that you must legally proceed to an imposed quarantine at destination we:
- After presentation of receipts, will reimburse up to $50 per day of quarantine, subject to a maximum of CAN $700, for perishable goods (groceries, restaurant orders) delivered during your quarantine at destination;
- After presentation of receipts, will reimburse up to CAN $100 for the sum of your taxi runs to and from a COVID-19 testing centre;
- Will provide access to virtual consultations with a physician (service only offered in the United States);
Take note that the rider does not reimburse expenses associated with a preventive screening test, including mandatory testing required to return to your province of residence. However, should you test positive to COVID-19 during such test, we will refund the amount you paid for the test.
**Conditions apply. See the COVID-19 Rider for details. These benefits do not apply in the event of a serologic test that provided a positive result to COVID-19 antibodies. Reimbursement of these benefits will occur after your return to your province of residence, upon presentation of proof of a positive diagnosis to COVID-19 (confirmed by a physician), and upon presentation of the required receipts and proofs of payment. These benefits are payable only once during the Policy Period.
Automatic extension (if you can’t return on your scheduled return date)
In the event that you receive a first positive diagnosis of COVID-19 (confirmed by a physician) during your trip and that your legally-imposed quarantine period exceeds your expiration date, we will automatically extend the policy period (and the rider), at no extra charge, up to 72 hours following the end of your legally-imposed quarantine, subject to a maximum automatic extension of 17 days.
The automatic extension is not offered in the event of a serologic test that provided a positive result to COVID-19 antibodies.

Is the COVID-19 Rider still relevant now that the advisory to avoid non-essential travel has been lifted?
ABSOLUTELY! Nobody knows what the pandemic still has in store for us so nobody can really tell if the global advisory will not be reinstated. Or if advisories won’t be issued for specific destinations.
The COVID-19 Rider provides peace of mind when travelling, confirming that COVID-19 will be covered* up to $5,000,000, no matter if an advisory pertaining to the pandemic is issued prior to your departure or during your trip, and giving you access to additional benefits if you test positive during your trip.
Without the Rider, you could be covered today, but would certainly go through unwanted stress if an advisory was issued for your destination after your departure, since exclusion 19f from the policy would become effective 10 days later.
The COVID-19 Rider eliminates the pandemic situation of COVID-19 from the scope of exclusion 19f, meaning that if an advisory is issued for your destination after your departure, you will be able to enjoy the rest of your trip without stress.
*Coverage is subject to the other conditions and limitations of the policy.
Can I add the COVID-19 Rider to my existing policy?
If your existing policy is a Tour+Med policy, if you have not left already, and if the COVID-19 Rider is available for your destination, yes, we can certainly add it.
But if you are covered by another insurer, we cannot add the COVID-19 Rider to your protection. The COVID-19 Rider is exclusive to Tour+Med products and must be added to your coverage before your departure date.
How much does the COVID-19 Rider cost?
There is no fixed surcharge for this option. The surcharge is calculated upon a mix of many factors, including your age and answers to the COVID-19 medical questionnaire. Speak with your representative for a quote.
Does the COVID-19 Rider cover variants?
Yes. The COVID-19 Rider provides coverage up to $5,000,000 in the event of a positive diagnosis to COVID-19 while on your trip, no matter if the positive diagnosis (confirmed by a physician) was due to the original virus or a variant.
